Megalochori is a picturesque and friendly village with the central square at its heart. Locals and tourists alike gather in traditional restaurants and cafes here to unwind and enjoy good company. It is worth spending an evening here, partaking of the warm atmosphere and tasting the fine local dishes.
There are other traditional taverns, cafes and shops in other corners of the village as well.
Meandering down the cobbled footpaths that criss-cross the village you will find a rich mixture of vernacular architecture ranging from neoclassical mansions to traditional cave houses with the solid wooden doors and high fences that protected occupants from pirates. Many of these buildings have now been restored and illustrate a style of architecture that dates back to the 17th century. The most distinctive landmarks of Megalochori are the steeples of the impressive churches, the two largest of which stand in the centre of the village. Smaller churches and chapels can be found in other parts of the village. The chapel of Agios Nikolaos, for example, is built on a fantastic location on the caldera cliff across the road from the village, from where you can enjoy a stunning view of the Caldera and the mesmerising Santorini sunsets.

The location of the village offers sublime views to the Caldera to the west, and towards the valley to the east that is home to the vineyards that Megalochori is renowned for. It also holds three exceptional wineries, Boutaris, Gavalas and Antoniou, which you can tour and learn about the history and production of wine-making, and of course savour unique volcanic wines. Megalochori is located in the southwest of Santorini, and about nine kilometers from the capital Fira, with easy access to beaches like Vlychada and Eros that lie to the south. On the caldera side, you can visit two dissimilar, arresting beaches; Thermi and Plaka that each have a chapel above them. These remote beaches feature hot springs and therapeutic waters, and are accessible only on foot or by boat. The view of the Caldera and to the island of Therasia is breathtaking. Megalochori has many elegant hotels, luxury suites, villas and apartments overlooking both the caldera or the plain with picturesque views either way.
